WTF?

You've probably just had this URL dumped on you from an IRC channel, and are wondering what the hell it is. This project started as a joke about how incestuous the Australian furry community is.. and it just went downhill from there.

The graph is primarily created to show the nature of X-slept-with-Y events in the furry community in Australia, and is complete to the best of our knowledge. The names have been excluded on purpose to protect people's privacy, and to prevent people digging up any sort of inaccuracies in the data :)

The chart is coloured according to state - Victoria is blue, Queensland is red (or pink, depending on your monitor), Western Australia is green, and New South Wales is orange (or yellow). The other states have not yet been coloured, due to a lack of data, and the possibility of individuals being identified in low-population states. Additionally, those persons not having a state defined will appear in a light grey. That'll likely go away within an update or two.

Each individual is represented by a randomly-generated number that changes each time the graph is generated. Don't ask me about "who's number 123?", because I honestly don't know.

Please, don't take this graph too seriously, or attempt to guess which node is yours - you're probably wrong, and in any case, the mapping between the published number and name isn't going to be released.

In Other News..

The response to the graph has been shocking to say the least. People proudly submitting data! In addition to that, Wizarth's sent in this little graphic, based on the graph..

2007-05-07: Wikifur covered the graph in their news section today in an article entitled "Australian fur creates yiff chart". Pity my poor DSL upstream!

How can I help?

Stop sleeping around and giving Australian furs a bad name! But, seriously... STOP SLEEPING AROUND! No, no.. really seriously, if you would like to disclose a list (selective or not - we'll hear about the rest on the grapevine) of who we can link you to, mail us with the details. Of course, any data given will be kept in the strictest confidence and never disclosed to other parties. This is all in good humour, and it's not being done to link the data to anyone.. just to have a good laugh at ourselves, and see how tangled the web of "relationships" (read: one night stands) is.

Updates will not be released until there are sufficient to protect privacy from people attempting to submit dodgy data, then compare versions. In other words.. tell your friends, tell your family, and for fuck's sake, don't tell the media (tongue firmly in-cheek).

Technical Information

How is the graph generated?: Using a mix of graphviz (dot), Makefile magic and awk scripting. It's not pretty; it's not stable, and it's not publishable. The code is utterly embarassing, but it works.
How do you get smooth fonts out of graphviz?: Honestly.. you're asking a question like this? Go use Google. Long story short though.. ghostscript is a wonderful filter, and dot generates Postscript.
Can I see the code? Please?: Ask nicely, and promise not to laugh. The code will not include any of the source data, only a dummy file.
I want to run something like this for my country or social group. Can I?: As above, ask nicely for the code, and let me know what sort of group you're doing it for.. I'm curious!
